True Detective Season 2 Trailer: 10 Things You Need To Know

9. Rachel McAdams As Ani Bezzerides

In what feels like an equally calculated move they got their first shot of the female lead in as quickly as possible. The first season was criticised for its relative dearth of female characters, with Michelle Monaghan criminally underused in the role of Woody Harrelson's long-suffering wife, and the theme of €œthe evil that men do€ (especially to women) was actually handled a lot better in the same year's Top Of The Lake. The star of that series, Elizabeth Moss, was in the running to play the role that eventually went to McAdams. It may very well be a calculated measure to get such criticisms off their back early on. Or it could just be they wanted to highlight McAdams who, to be fair, does look pretty great in the role of Ani Bezzerides, €œa Ventura County Sheriff€™s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves€. Which is about as far from Mean Girls as you can get. And to be fair to HBO, based on this teaser it looks like McAdams might very well the be lead in this season €“ not a breakout in the mould of Rust, but this is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander like the first go around. Still, she appears to be in charge, leading an armoured team of cops on a raid and generally looking like somebody with a lot on her plate. Expect her to be the show's moral core.
