Twin Peaks: The Return Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Brutal Pacing

Twin Peaks David Lynch Miguel Ferrer

The original series was never in much of a hurry to tell its story, but The Return has unambiguously one-upped it in the sluggish pacing department. Scenes frequently drag on much, much longer than they need to as Lynch lingers on a glance or focuses on a low mechanical hum for 30 seconds too long.

It does help evoke a certain unsettling, hypnotic rhythm, but it can also make it easy to tune out of what's going on for a moment and just wish he'd get to the point already, especially if you made the brave decision to watch all four episodes in a single chunk.

Simply, this probably isn't a show you'd want to binge when it's all finally released, but week-to-week, Lynch's painstaking approach should prove much more tolerable, if still exasperating to a point.
