V Wars Review: 5 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Ian Somerhalder's Performance

To the untrained eye, it may have seemed a little on-the-nose to cast Ian Somerhalder in the lead role of a vampire drama, given that he spent the better part of a decade playing a vampire on The CW's The Vampire Diaries, but in reality, it was a stroke of genius.

Somerhalder's name may attract the countless Vampire Diaries fans out there to V Wars, but this time around, he isn't playing a vampire. Make no mistake about it, Dr. Luther Swann is a completely different character than Damon Salvatore, and the veteran performer wastes absolutely no time making us aware of that.

As Luther is at the heart of the story, Somerhalder dives deep into the character's emotions, giving us a well-nuanced and layered performance as the conflicted doctor. And he has ample opportunity to devour the juicy material that the writers have gifted him with, never missing a chance to go all in on a particular scene while just as easily reining it back whenever necessary. He is, without a doubt, V Wars' greatest asset.
