Vikings: 10 Most Disturbing Moments
6. Leif Plays The Sacrificial Lamb
Sacrifice was a massive part of early history, as blood offerings to gods and nature were often common place. While the practice was undoubtedly used in almost every culture, it predominantly focussed on using animals, but that wasn't always the case.
Human sacrifice was a certainty in history, but its practice in Viking culture is a little shady. Still, that didn't stop this show from depicting many brutal and agonising sacrifices, with one of the most disturbing being Leif's.
In Uppsala, a sacrifice ceremony was prepared for Earl Ragnar Lothbrok. Athelstan was originally intended to be an offering in this ritual. However, Leif ended up taking his place to provide the best possible sacrifice for his people and Earl.
The nature of these deaths was horrific, as the slitting of a human throat is a cringe-inducing image, and this entire segment was filled to the brim with it. Still, the act itself was only complimented by the bone-chilling shot that shows him and the other sacrifices hanging upside down.
The segment played out with a cold sadness, which made the scene's gruesome nature all the more unsettling.
