Vikings: 10 Most Disturbing Moments

5. King Aelle Meets The Blood Angel

Vikings Athelstan

Vikings was many people's first introduction to the barbaric practice of the Blood Eagle. This execution method was infamous thanks to its absolute barbarism and the horrible pain that it would inflict on it's victims. While the history of the act has become somewhat muddled, with plenty of scepticism about its real-life use, the concept is still enough to strike fear into your heart.

It consists of the victim being placed in a prone position and bound. Afterwards, their ribs would be severed from their spine with a sharp tool and pulled outwards. Then the victims exposed lungs would be ripped out and fashioned to look like a pair of wings, thus the name Blood Eagle.

This show certainly dabbled with the concept more than once, and either of them could be on this list. However, while Jarl Borg's time with the deathly punishment was horrifying, the barbaric execution of King Aelle was worse.

The scene is hard to watch, as the act is shown in gruesome detail, but the cold and malicious reactions from Bjorn, Floki and their brothers made the execution far more shocking and gruesome. Sure, King Aelle certainly had it coming, but the coldness of the procedure was utterly hard to watch.
