The single-most iconic moment from Vikings so far is the Blood Eagle scene, one of the most uncomfortable pieces of television we've seen in a long, long time. Those of you out there vaguely familiar with Viking rituals may already know a thing or two about the Blood Eagle - those who don't, it's frankly the single most painful, grotesque methods of torture ever dreamed up. First, the ribs of the victim are cut open by the spine, and pulled open so that they resemble blood-stained wings. The lungs are then forcibly pulled out through the wounds in the victim's back, and allowed to hang over the shoulders, completing the image of, well, a very dead eagle. This particular fate befell Jarl Borg, who had the temerity to attempt to kill all of Ragnar's people. Upon being sentenced to death by Blood Eagle, you think they're not surely going to go through with it. That someone will somehow save Borg at the last moment. How wrong you were.
