Vikings: Each Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best

9. Athelstan

Next up on our list is the timid monk come fearless drengr. Admittedly, when he is first introduced you could never imagine him being included in a top ten list of characters. However, the journey that our English monk embarks upon, earns him a well-deserved spot.

During Ragnar’s first raid of England, he stumbles upon Athelstan and saves him. He is eventually taken as a slave by Ragnar and a budding relationship grows between the two. It is this relationship that makes Athelstan such a special character. It is incredible to see two complete opposites converse and share beliefs.

Following his awesome transformation to a Viking. Athelstan is saved from crucifixion by King Ecbert and then faces an internal struggle with his Christian beliefs. From this point his persona changes again and he even becomes embroiled in a love affair with Princess Judith. It once again shows the diversity of the man and the development of his relationship with the King is excellent viewing.

It was a rollercoaster ride with Athelstan and his eventual death was a hard one to swallow. Made even tougher by Ragnar’s reaction to the murder of his close friend. I defy anyone to watch that burial scene and not shed a slight tear.

George Wilks hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
