The Walking Dead: 13 Things That Make No Damn Sense

7. The Zombies Hunt On Scent Yet Couldn't Find The Group Under Cars

Walking Dead Freeway As the episode Guts makes clear, zombies don't really hunt with sight €“ they hunt with smell. They can smell a regular human very easily, but if you throw diseased entrails down yourself €“ as Rick and Glenn do €“ they can't smell diddly squat. Within that particular episode it's a cool plot point which makes for a tense set-piece when the rain comes tumbling down. But what it does, and does accidentally, is raise later questions. The scene in question is the one on the wrecked freeway in the season two premiere. When the RV breaks down and the group realise a zombie horde is about to pass through, Rick commands everyone get under the cars and hide. Strangely, Rick's plan is successful €“ the passing horde can't smell the group under the cars until T-Dog cuts his arm. Now, season 1 made it pretty clear that blood didn't have to be outside the body to be noticed €“ it could very well still be inside, and the zombies will still notice it because you're human. After all, it's not as if Rick and Glenn are leaking gore when the rains come in, but the Walkers still sense them. Yet the same surely still applies here, but for whatever reason the Walkers can't notice them, even when they're effectively standing next to where the group's hiding. They look like they haven't showered in days, so I'm pretty sure they'll smell enough to be spotted. Yet curiously, they don't.
