The Walking Dead: 8 Songs That Really Set The Mood

4. 'Serpents' - Sharon Van Etten

Season 4, Episode 4 - Indifference 'Serpents' fits Indifference so well. The episode is a massive turning point for the character of Carol Peletier, who until now had been a fairly meek and timid woman, scarred from many years of abuse by her now-deceased husband. While it could be argued the turning point has already occurred, this is the episode where the repercussions truly come to light. Carol, having killed Tyreese's girlfriend Karen, is begrudgingly banished from the group by Rick for her actions. This is enormous - Carol has been with the group since the very beginning and frankly, the audience has grown quite fond of her. These days, with all her recent development, she's become one of the show's most popular stars. However, we can't help but watch her knowing what she has done. The question is whether or not she was right to do it - and whether her disturbing indifference to the act marks too dangerous a change in her personality. 'Serpents' tells of 'serpents in the mind'. This truly seems to resonate with Carol, who is indeed plagued by what she felt she had to do. Rick too is left emotionally battered by his decision. It's only now that you realise just how much Carol meant to the group. Recently, Carol has returned to the series and is headed for Terminus. Will those serpents re-emerge within her mind? Only time will tell. There is another reason for this song being on the list however. It was used as the trailer song for season 4's trailer and therefore set the entire mood of the season. Combine this with Hershel's rousing speech about risking your life and the fact that Carol and her decisions have become what is essentially the face of the season, and we see that 'Serpents' truly did set the mood for the harrowing decisions that were to come.
