Westworld: 8 Flaws That Could Totally Ruin It
4. The Scenes Between Dolores And William Are Bordering Melodrama
At the beginning of Westworld, Dolores was one of the most interesting and likeable characters. In the first episode specifically, her relationship with Teddy - though animated and exaggerated - was sweet and affecting, built on the sorts of sweeping gestures found in old Western movies.
Her relationship with William, however, is somewhat different. It's tough to get a sense for why Dolores has fallen in love with William, but that's not the main problem. The issue is that, knowing Dolores is a Host, it's impossible to believe she has any genuine feeling for him. After all, we've seen countless Hosts feign emotion over humans. Westworld's central location (the brother) is literally built on this.
What this means is that certain scenes come across as like something from a soap opera. The worst offender is the scene when William rejects Dolores on the train, claiming he has a woman on the outside, only to storm back into her carriage and profess his true feelings. The tone of the entire scene is completely sincere, but knowing what we know about the world and how it works, it's hard to take seriously.
The solution would be to play up to these doubts, revealing in a cunning twist that Dolores doesn't care for William at all, and that she was just manipulating his human emotions for her own gain.
Sadly, there's been no evidence for this twist so far, so it's unlikely to happen.
