Westworld: 8 Flaws That Could Totally Ruin It
5. We Still Have No Idea What The Maze Is
It's safe to say that one of the shows central, overarching mysteries is that of "the maze", an enigmatic concept that has been referenced by multiple characters and is actively being sought out by the Man in Black. The issue is that eight episodes in, we're still no closer to knowing what it actually is - and that means it's not all that compelling.
Seriously, we have no idea. Is the maze a person? A place? Or nothing more than a vague, philosophical concept? The most we've got to go on is the map found across the park, from being carved on tables to printed on people's scalps. We know it was created by Arnold, but that's it. Nothing more.
Why this is an issue, is because it's hard to really care about the Man in Black's search when we literally don't know what he's searching for. The longer the build up with absolutely no details, the harder it's going to be satisfying audiences with answers.
What would alleviate this issue somewhat would be if the show established the maze's parameters. Fine, keep it as Westworld's ultimate mystery, but start to give viewers something - anything - to up their desire to find out more.
