Westworld: 8 Flaws That Could Totally Ruin It
3. Intricate Puzzles Obscure What The Show Is Really About
At its heart, Westworld appears to be a show about what makes humans human. After all, if the Hosts think that what they see and feel is real, what makes those experiences illegitimate? it's also concerned with the reality of human nature, what humans want and desire when freed from the constraints of societal expectation.
These deliberations are what drive the show and make it interesting, but they're beginning to become obscured by intricacy. At the beginning, the show seemed fascinated by these questions, but now it's moving towards an obsession with puzzles.
Teasing viewers every week with a host of new questions shifts the focus away from how any of it actually relates to its viewers as humans, cutting out the heart of what makes it all compelling.
That's not to say the show should drop its mysteries - definitely not. But using confusion as a way to propel the plot forward and to keep audiences coming back, rather than viewers wanting to return to find out how all of this stuff effects the show's characters is a sure fire way to quickly turn it stale.
As mentioned, the answer is not allowing mystery to become the primary focus, keeping the characters and human aspects of the show at the forefront.
