Westworld: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
4. Bernard Lowe
At the beginning of Westworld, Bernard is easy to relate to. His passion for and dedication to his work is admirable, and his relationship with Theresa and tragic loss of his son makes him quite sympathetic.
But then things get...complicated.
We learn that Bernard is actually a host, made by Robert Ford in the image of his former partner Arnold. Rewatching the series with this knowledge in mind causes one to appreciate Jeffery Wright's performance even more, as he subtly conveys his true nature long before it's revealed.
Bernard becomes more interesting after we learn he is manufactured, and his struggle with this knowledge is both fascinating and emotional. Despite the guilt he feels for actions such as Theresa's murder, Bernard admirably continues to search for answers instead of simply wiping his memory, culminating in his acceptance of the fact that he never truly had a son.
Despite vowing to put an end to the mistreatment of hosts, Bernard is horrified by Dolores' slaughter of the Delos board in the finale. After spending most of his life believing he was human and only recently discovering he is a robot, Bernard is in an unique position; He can sympathize and identify with both parties, making him Westworld's only chance for peace between hosts and humans.
