Westworld Review: 10 Non-Spoiler Reasons It's HBO's Next Big Thing

8. Dark, Weird, And Sexy

Westworld Review 2
HBO

The above three words are almost pre-requisite for any drama series on HBO, so it should come as no surprise that they very much apply here as well.

Westworld is set at a futuristic theme park where humans can live out their most depraved desires, so it's no surprise there's a strange darkness to the show: Want to kill a guy? Here's a gun. Want to sleep with a prostitute? Here's the brothel. At the other end, you've got the people who make the robots, creating memories and storylines to cater to the whims and fancies of themselves and the people paying to visit.

Along with that you've got, as you might expect, plenty of sex and violence. It hasn't branched into sexposition yet (thankfully), but there's plenty here recognisable to a HBO drama - except this time, it's people having sex with robots. There are moments of violence, moments of gore, and it all adds up into the violent delights and violent ends Westworld aims to offer.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
