Westworld Season 1: 7 Ups And 3 Downs From 'Chestnut'

4. More Of Maeve

Last week put most of the A.I. centric focus on Dolores, and this week it's a different host who gets to step into the spotlight: Maeve, as played by Thandie Newton.

Maeve existed mostly in the background of the first episode, albeit with at least one standout moment (shooting the guy from close range), but really gets the chance to come to the fore here - and Newton is certainly up to the task.

Whatever's going wrong with the hosts appears to be catching, with Maeve the latest victim. However, rather than taking her out of action, she's reprogrammed by Elsie (Shannon Woodward) who has been given the task of fixing the 'broken' hosts. The first step is to turn up the aggression that Maeve exhibits, which gives some excellent results. Westworld's madam was already one of the sharpest characters around, but that goes up another notch here, and Newton gets to have a lot of fun with the character.

There's also time to explore some of the character's past, which is as dark and violent as you might expect, including a child and, of course, the man in black. Quite what that all means is unclear, but it's very interesting to watch play out, giving us yet another character well worth investing our time in - although quite what will become of her isn't clear.
