Westworld Season 1: 7 Ups And 3 Downs From 'Chestnut'

3. The Man In Black Continues His Quest

The Man in Black/Gunslinger, portrayed by Ed Harris, is perhaps the most enigmatic figure in the entire series at this point, which is really saying something.

While all the other newcomers just want to have some form of titillation and live out their fantasies, either saving the day and getting the girl, or killing the hero and taking what they want by force, he's after some deeper knowledge and understanding. He mentions that he has been coming here for around 30 years - which puts his first time at Westworld at around the same point as the "critical failure" - and has some kind of map to the park.

Here we find him searching for another level, and an entry to the maze. It's slightly more information, and yet at the same time just gives us more questions. What exactly does he want? Who is he? What is the maze?

Throughout all of this, Ed Harris turns the character into one of stone-cold menace. He's cool, he's calculated, and he's not afraid to fire off a bunch of rounds and kill everyone in his eyeline. Just incase there was any doubt, this episode reaffirms his status as Westworld's biggest badass, and one of the most interesting characters on the show.
