What If...? - 25 Biggest WTF Moments

In an episode based around the deaths of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, each and every one could realistically be counted as a WTF moment. Tony Stark was murdered when Natasha injected him with a needle, while she herself was savagely beaten to death. Thor was taken out by one of Hawkeye’s stray arrows, and Barton himself was killed while sitting in custody.

None of these deaths however, can compare with how unsettling, and how jarring the death of Bruce Banner was. He was under the impression that he couldn’t die after trying to kill himself previously, however he was proved wrong in quite spectacular fashion.

Like with many moments in What If…?, this scene started exactly the same as has been seen before. Bruce was attacked in the glass bridge at Culver University before bursting forth and tearing Thunderbolt Ross’ team to shreds. What didn’t happen 13 years ago however, was Bruce Banner’s ultimate fate.

He started expanding more and more, like a balloon, until he burst, covering everyone in the immediate vicinity in green bits of Hulk. His heart had been enlarged, and simply didn’t stop. There have been some tough to watch death scenes in the MCU over the years, but it’s hard to think of anything more discomforting than this.
