When Doctor Strange had his life changing car crash, he could no longer use his hands properly. He sought help in the mystic arts, but never once looked to go back and change it. When he lost Christine however, he drove himself mad trying to undo her death.

Though he used the Eye of Agamotto to go back in time dozens of times, no matter what he did, Christine died. Whether they took the bridge or the surface streets, went to the party or to a local diner, she was either killed in a car crash, suffered a heart attack, or was shot.

Even when Strange was nowhere near her, she died. This was, as The Ancient One described it, an Absolute Point in time. No matter what, Christine Palmer had to die in order to send Stephen Strange on his journey to become the Sorcerer Supreme.
