After Christine’s death, Doctor Strange went back in time, over and over again, in the hope of somehow finding a way to avoid such a tragic thing. However, the Ancient One appeared to tell him that, as an Absolute Point in time, her death could never be undone.

While this was supposed to be a warning to Strange, there was nothing that would have spurred him on and motivated him more than to be told that he couldn’t do something. With this, he went back in time to the Lost Library of Cagliostro, before it was lost, and researched.

To break the Absolute Point, Strange needed an absurd amount of power that couldn’t be achieved without the absorption of other beings. He took the power, and at the same time murdered countless creatures from all corners of the universe. Strange’s shape shifted with each being he took on, even if just for a second, which gifted him some amazing new powers that allowed him to defeat the original Doctor Strange and go toe to toe with Ultron later in the series.

Surely this would have been a red flag to the Sorcerer Supreme that what he was doing was wrong, but as has been proven time and time again with Hank Pym, Wanda Maximoff, and Vision, grief can make even the best do awful things.
