In The Comics

Jessica Jones (née Campbell) was a classmate of Peter Parker who, after losing her parents in a car wreck, discovered that she had developed superpowers. (This was presumably a by-product of the Fantastic Four's first battle with Galactus, which occurred around the same time.)

She decided to become a hero herself under the name Jewel, sporting a costume and bright purple hair. After a traumatizing experience with Purple Man, however, she took on the more cynical alter ego of Knightress, before giving up the vigilante life altogether and becoming a private investigator (as well going back to her natural hair color.)

In The Show

The Netflix MCU drops us right in the middle of Jessica's time as the dark-haired, leather jacket-wearing, hard drinking owner of Alias Investigations. Purple Man (now called Kilgrave) does still play a prominent role in her story, however. Also, while her time as Jewel has been referenced, Knightress appears to be nonexistent.

In The Defenders, she seems dead-set on staying away from the fight against The Hand, but eventually relents and joins her newfound teammates. After all, she may not know kung fu, but she can still throw a car.

(Also, according to the MCU timeline, Jessica is now roughly twice Peter Parker's age.)
