In The Comics

After being falsely incarcerated at Seagate Prison, Carl Lucas was subjected to abuse from a racist guard, as well as freak genetic experiments that gave him his super strength and indestructible skin. The original Hero for Hire would then break out of prison, adopt the name Luke Cage (aka Power Man), as well as an outfit that was very clearly designed in the 1970s. (Later iterations of the character would adopt a more casual look, however, as well as move his hair from the top of his head to his face.)

Cage would also eventually go on to marry Jessica Jones.

In The Show

For the most part, the MCU keeps Cage's origin story intact. And while he doesn't wear the Power Man suit with the open yellow shirt and chain belt, it is paid homage to during a flashback to his escape from prison. Netflix's Cage also goes with the character's modern bearded, bald look.

As one of the four Defenders, Luke gets dragged into the fight against The Hand, During this time, he develops shaky friendships with Danny Rand and Matt Murdock, as well as attempts to mend his peculiar relationship with Jessica Jones.
