A relentless conqueror in his own time, today Nandor tends to inspire more pathos than terror. Many of his best moments rely on how long ago his past glories really were and how detached he is from them now.

It is that angle that is played up in this episode in which the once mighty conqueror discovers that Alcalidar, the Middle Eastern country he once ruled with an iron fist, hasn't existed in over five hundred years. All he has left of it is a bag of soil from the old country, lovingly brought with him to America and then dropped on the floor while showing it off to the documentary crew. It's little moments of failure like this that drive home how pathetic Nandor's present life is compared to the pillaging of a medieval warlord.

Inspired by the 1992 Olympic basketball "Dream Team" (because Nandor can't resist an all-conquering power that crushed all opposition), he decides to become a US citizen instead. The only thing stopping him is the small matter of a citizenship test which proveidea an entertaining answer to the question of what happens to a crucifix-fearing damned creature when having to swear an oath in God's name.

The B-plot in this episode also shines, giving Nadja her own story of trying to be a mentor to the newly turned Jenna, an excellent guest star performance of awkwardness and physical comedy from Booksmart's Beanie Feldstein. It's a shame that Feldstein's commitment to playing Monica Lewinsky in American Crime Story kept Jenna from reappearing in Season 2 as the new vampire is definitely a character with more to explore.
