Unlike most TV series remakes of beloved films, What We Do in the Shadows actually manages to improve upon its cult classic source material. This FX comedy horror series is wickedly funny, telling the stories of vampires living in a house in modern day Staten Island.

Two seasons in, the show has captivated audiences the way a vampire captivates their human prey before taking a bite. Each episode explores a new element of the vampires' world, such as their relationships with other undead or supernatural creatures like ghosts, werewolves, trolls, or even other vampires, how they search for their human meals, specifically virgins, or their narrow escapes from vampire hunters, as well as vampire law enforcement. In focusing on building the world of these vampires, the show allows for even more humour and depth than the film.

Despite the excellent world building, the true heart of What We Do in the Shadows is its cast. The five leads all bring a strange charm to this weird world, and make the show something special.

Once, Nandor the Relentless ruled the kingdom of Al-Quolanudar. Now, he lives in modern day Staten Island. His best moments reflect the difficulty of that transition.

Still attracted to power, Nandor learns that he cannot conquer Staten Island the way he conquered lands a long time ago. This leads to some hilarious moments, such as his confronting the Staten Island council, and his desire to become a US Citizen in honour of the powerful US men's Olympic basketball team.

Nandor's relationship with his familiar Guillermo is a surprisingly tender part of his character. Though he genuinely cares for Guillermo, he has trouble expressing it to him, leading to some fights and tension between the two. This leads to some hilarity, such the time when he calls Guillermo a friend, and he admits that it sounds wrong so he erases his declaration of friendship from Guillermo's memory.

Nandor only comes in last because someone has to. He's a great character, played to perfection by Kayvan Novak. However, he lacks some of the creativity of the rest of the cast, and his treatment of Guillermo can sometimes be frustrating. Still, it's always entertaining to listen to his stories of his former glory.
