X-Men '97: 10 New Villains We Want To See
6. Matthew Malloy
When Charles Xavier discovered an eight-year-old mutant called Matthew Malloy, he realised the child had the ability to alter reality any way he wanted with a thought.
But because Malloy's powers were tethered to his emotions, Xavier realised the boy could cause unmitigated destruction if he lost his temper. To avoid such a calamity, Xavier erased Malloy's memory and placed a psychic block on his brain so he couldn't use his powers.
But after Malloy suffered a trauma in adulthood, his powers manifested once more. Since he had no training to control his abilities, he unintentionally unleashed a torrent of destruction everywhere he went.
Even though the X-Men have a plethora of cut-and-dry bad guys, the stories are at their best when the villain is conflicted. Although it's fun to watch the X-Men battle Magneto, Juggernaut, or Mojo, the strongest episodes of the old show usually revolved around stopping a foe, who was a victim of their own abilities.
It was heartwrenching to see Proteus unable to control his emotions or his powers. We were devastated when the X-Men were forced to fight Jean Grey, and if Matthew Mallow was brought into the revival, he could become one of the series' most tragic villains.
