YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
3. THAT Twist
Joe would do anything for love, but sometimes Love would do anything for him.
This review may have already mentioned the show's affinity for subverting audiences' expectations once or twice, but not even its delicious reputation for such a thing could sum up just how jaw-dropping that twist was. Not even the words 'jaw-dropping' could do that (look away now if you don't want spoilers).
The season had built up to Love's discovery of Joe's heinous crimes, making us all believe that she would understandably react like Beck did and run for her life - while the safety net of Candace's return would allow her to make it out alive and report him to the police. It would be the most natural of reactions for a normal person and a believable outcome for a man who had evaded law enforcement for far too long.
But that didn't happen. No, the actual outcome was much more shocking than that, and it delivered season finale-level shocks before the finale itself, bringing the story back to life before it could even begin to drag. It may have hindered one or two story elements and did an injustice to a number of characters who deserved better, but on a whole it was, well, like we said: Jaw-dropping.
