YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
4. Fear and Loathing in Beverly Hills
YOU is a thoroughly compelling tale told by the most unreliable of narrators. The reason it works so well is that it's hard to take Joe at his word because, even though we see what he does, we only see (and hear) what he wants us to. But how do you make that tale more compelling when he's beginning to, dare we say it, see the unreliability (among the barbarity and other things) of his actions? Why, you make the entire scenario unreliable!
The eighth episode of the season, 'Fear and Loathing in Beverly Hills', does just that as, thanks to an LSD-induced trip inflicted on him by Forty, Joe is completely out of control when it comes to his faculties, actions and even thoughts. That resulted in this notoriously unreliable narrator becoming more unstable than ever - which ironically came at a time when he was learning to see things clearer - as he had no clue what was real and what wasn't. Finally, Joe felt like the YOU viewers and we, well, we were more confused than ever.
A masterclass of mystery, illusion and deception, this one changed the game for the season and kicked off a chain of events that would reinvigorate the show just in time for its final act. And what an enthralling game-changer it was.
