YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
1. A Strong Follow-Up
After YOU's first season came to a close, we were all left with a somewhat melancholic feeling. Yes, Joe Goldberg had escaped to love (and kill) another day, but after he killed our beloved Beck, did we even want to see that? And, more to the point, did we want to see the same narrative play out again?
Season 2, however, manages to quash those doubts, as it accomplishes everything it set out to do. Its new setting reinvigorates its familiar story, while the added elements of backstory give us the context we craved that allow us to understand Joe (though obviously not agree with him) that little bit better. It builds upon the established order of the show and manages to use its predictably unpredictable structure to make us question everyone and everything along the way.
It's not perfect; it fails in areas where its predecessor succeeded, and succeeds in areas where it failed, but it is a strong follow-up - one that many may even prefer over the first and, in all honesty, it's easy to see why.
