The last time Love's overbearing mother was seen onscreen, she was on her way to rehab following a chaotic drunken binge that saw her kidnap Henry and burn her new vineyard to spite her ex-husband. It was the culmination of one too many bad days for the Quinn matriarch, who was at odds with her daughter and grieving the loss of her son, Forty.

Before leaving the Quinn-Goldberg driveway for rehab, Dotty and Joe had a brief conversation about Love's deceased husband, James. She heavily insinuated that her daughter had a hand in her lover's death and this reveal greatly distresses Joe, who at that point intended to leave Love.

Now, Dotty may have seen the Joe/Love murder-suicide story and assume that history grimly repeated itself but the Quinn matriarch has shown to be more intuitive than that. She figured out that Love had conflicted feelings for Theo and it was entirely possible that she knew more about Joe than she let on due to her contacts in the world of private investigators.
