Young Justice: Outsiders - 5 Ups & 1 Down From The Midseason Finale

4. Welcome To The Show, Cyborg

While all four episodes collectively carried on the main narrative, they also served another purpose: introducing us to Cyborg. Beginning with 'Exceptional Human Beings', we quickly got to know Victor Stone - a promising young athlete with the world at his feet and a bright future ahead of him, but all he wanted was the attention of his technology-obsessed father, Silas, who was too busy working on a Father Box given to him by the Justice League.

Victor's story progressed over the following few episodes when an argument between him and his father led to an accidental explosion in S.T.A.R. Labs, fatally injuring the younger Stone. However, a desperate Silas used the alien technology in the Father Box to heal his son. Despite the fact that Victor was seconds away from death, Silas' quick-thinking was successful and, in that moment, Cyborg was born.

Unable to forgive his father, Victor left with Halo (who apparently had more in common with him than we knew) and subsequently met the whole team of young heroes. While he wasn't exactly thrilled by the prospect of being a 'freak', it was clear that he felt at least mildly comfortable among them and, due to this, we should expect to see a lot more of him in the second half.

Most comic fans already know Cyborg's origin story and how it plays out, but seeing it portrayed here (and so graphically) allowed us to empathise with the Young Justice iteration of Victor, making his introduction all the more powerful. Furthermore, it was enhanced by the show's already-heavy reliance on the Father Box technology.
