Television viewers outside the UK will likely be scratching their heads at the name Holby City, but for British audiences, this hospital-based drama was a staple of the small screen for over 20 years.

A spinoff of existing medical drama Casualty, Holby City centred on the working lives of the many employees at the hospital, as well as their personal lives.

Think of it as Grey's Anatomy, only with about a third of the budget and a quarter of the sex appeal.

Considering how long it was around for, it's not a massive shock to learn that many stars have played characters on Holby, including several from the Whoniverse. One nice crossover came from an episode in 2020, where Captain Jack Harkness met the Fugitive Doctor.

John Barrowman and Jo Martin were both part of the show's cast at the time and, in one episode, shared a conversation that ended with Barrowman's character saluting, and calling Martin's character "Doctor".

Martin's character is a neurosurgeon on the show, but this was also clearly a reference to her time in the TARDIS, and was confirmed as an intentional nod in a behind-the-scenes video.

And hey, we all know how Jack felt about saluting Time Lords!
