10 AEW Stars Who Desperately Need More TV Time

Sad to say, Sammy Guevara’s first reign as TNT Champion underwhelmed an audience who were ready to get behind him in the role. The matches were good-not-great and in the face of high expectations Sammy hasn’t resonated as a true champion.

While there’s hope for his second attempt following an incredible five-star ladder match, he’s not been helped by the presentation. Cody Rhodes’ first TNT Title run was defined by his weekly TV battles with any and all comers. The matches were a weekly attraction, a hook to make viewers tune in. Other champions took their reigns in different directions but “The Spanish God’s” first run has been modelled most closely on Cody’s open challenge, attempting to put Guevara over as a fighting champion.

But where Cody was on TV every week defending the belt, and likewise TBS Champion Jade Cargill is installed as a weekly fixture, Sammy’s title defences felt like something Tony Khan squeezes in when he has the space, once or twice a month. This is despite the extra hour of TV he now has to play with.

Ironically Sammy’s been seen more since losing to Cody and scrapping for the interim belt. Now he’s champion again this needs to continue: Sammy needs to be presented as a big deal on weekly television. That means more than just mucking about with cue cards in the ad break.
