In the wake of his classic rivalry with Bret 'The Hitman' Hart culminating in a masterful double-turn at WrestleMania 13, the all-round badass that was 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin continued battling with The Hart Foundation throughout 1997.

And it was during those subsequent brawls with the Hart clan when a compelling feud with Bret's younger brother Owen began to develop, with the sneaky Hart lad ultimately cheating 'The Texas Rattlesnake' out of a victory at In Your House 16: Canadian Stampede with a tights-assisted roll-up.

Austin was understandably fuming.

The week's leading up to their eventual Intercontinental Championship fight were stuffed full of interesting developments, too.

Austin claimed he would lay a smacker on Owen's ass if he failed to walk out with the belt, the toughest S.O.B. in the company lifted tag gold with Dude Love by besting Hart and the British Bulldog, and Owen targeted his challenger during a tag title defence on the red show.

They were well and truly delivering the goods during that eventual heated PPV battle as well... right up until Owen accidentally spiked Austin on his head with a piledriver and broke his neck.

From that moment on, the intense feud forever became synonymous with a horrendous injury that would completely change one of the biggest stars in the industry's life and lead to his early retirement in 2003.
