10 Amazing WWE World Title Wins (That Led To Lame Championship Runs)

7. Edge

Edge’s rise to the main event was a bit of a stop-start affair for a few years.

Clearly tipped for big things by the company, a badly timed injury stopped his momentum during the heyday of the Smackdown Six. In early 2006, though, Edge became the first superstar to cash in the Money In The Bank briefcase to take the perennially polarising John Cena’s title following a gruelling Elimination Chamber match.

It was a long time coming and the win was big news, propelling the Canadian up the card. He’d go on to hold the strap all the way through to… the Royal Rumble later that month, where he’d drop the title straight back to Cena. He did get one cracking TLC match against Ric Flair of all people during his run, but this wasn’t an ideal debut as the champ for anyone.

Edge spoke on a recent documentary about his frustration over the booking, but it certainly did the hall of famer’s career no harm. He’d continue to feud with Cena throughout the year, and each man can probably consider the other their greatest ever rival.
