It might seem unthinkable, but it really is just four years since Tetsuya Naito and Kenny Omega were the two biggest heels on the NJPW roster. Naito was on the cusp of becoming a beloved babyface hero and Omega was about to smash his way into the stratosphere, but the two rivals went into this G1 block decider as the leaders of two undoubtedly heel factions.

It was an incredible match, one of the greatest in recent history and maybe one of the best pro wrestling matches of all town, a first-time match that soon became a journey, the sort of rollercoaster that is wrestling at its very best. The match was full of dangerous spots and moments of true peril, coaxing a frenzied reaction out of a crowd that wasn't too sure who to cheer for at first but decided to cheer for pro wrestling by the climax.

Much to the shock of many, it was Omega who came out on top, hitting Naito with a One-Winged Angel before going on to defeat Hirooki Goto in the finals. That match was another classic, but fans still remember this heel vs. hell masterpiece as the highlight of that famous G1 Climax. This was everything that makes the G1 and New Japan special.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
