10 Awesome Heel Vs. Heel Wrestling Matches

8. Edge Vs. Randy Orton (WWE RAW 30/04/2007)

At Backlash 2020, Randy Orton defeated Edge in what was billed as the 'Greatest Wrestling Match Ever'. It was a 45-minute tour-de-force, touching on the history of both men and many of their contemporaries and colleagues. It was a whole step up from their lacklustre Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania 36, that's for sure, but was it the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever? It wasn't even the best Edge vs. Randy Orton match.

The best match between the former Rated-RKO teammates took place just a few short months after the dissolution of that team, on a random episode of RAW in April 2007. The two had spent much of the year hovering around the WWE Championship picture with little success, coming up short on a number of occasions, leading to this match.

This match was an exercise in proving oneself, a battle between two arrogant and self-obsessed men, entitled villains who had found comradeship in each other but had simply been too villainous for it to last. It was the perfect blend of space and patience, of explosive sequences and expertly-placed rest holds, an example of how the latter can enhance the former. Edge and Orton had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands, two absolute professionals at work.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
