7. Triple H Vs. Kurt Angle (WWE Royal Rumble 2001)

Wrestling fans have a tendency to remember the Attitude Era with the most rose-tinted of nostalgia glasses, imbuing feuds with a quality that they never really had in the first place. Is that the case with the famous Kurt Angle/Triple H/Stephanie McMahon love triangle? Well, yes and no. The feud genuinely was fantastic, but it eventually got scuppered by the dark hand of backstage politics. In other words, Triple H gonna Triple H.

Before it all petered away entirely, fans were treated to this diamond of a heel vs. heel WWE Championship at the 2001 Royal Rumble. Kurt Angle was the champion going in but boy was he weak, a third wheel in the story and a third wheel at the top of the WWE roster, lagging behind Steve Austin and his Rumble opponent in terms of importance.

That was until the bell rang, of course, at which point Kurt Angle became a wrestling machine. This match against Hunter was a clinic, two top-level performers at the peak of their powers, and not even a shady finish featuring Stone Cold cold hurt it. Angle and Triple H had (and have) great chemistry between the ropes, and this was one of their very best bouts together.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
