The WWE European Championship wasn't famous for giving fans a plethora of great matches. To be honest, it didn't get any better than the very first championship match, an amazing battle between tag team partners and extended family members The British Bulldog and Owen Hart. The duo were actually World Tag Team Champions at the time, another curious quirk to a stunning exhibition of professional wrestling excellence.

The match took place in Berlin, an apt location for a new continental-centric title. Bulldog had defeated Mankind and Vader to get to the finals, while Owen had overcome brother Bret (by countout) and Flash Funk to make it to the showcase match. 'Showcase' is very much the correct term, as these two put on a clinic of back-and-forth magnificence, a match that showed the best of both men.

It may have been heel vs heel but the crowd was well and truly on the side of the Bulldog, a credit to Owen's heel-work and the ability of Davey Boy to work as the powerhouse babyface from underneath. It was arguably the last great match of either man's career.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
