10 Awesome Moments From The WWE Invasion
6. The Birth Of The Hurricane
This should never have worked. Just look at the mocking of Nikki ASH's recent run on RAW to know that a hokey gimmick like this should never work.
Wrestling treasure Gregory Helms, made it work.
In the final days of WCW, Helms was part of the lame 3 Count stable, a mock boyband group who had the looks but little else going for them. As part of the alliance, he was just another face in the crowd despite being the WCW Cruiserweight Champion to the more popular, and just as underrated, Billy Kidman.
Helms needed something. After being mocked by a 'What'-fuelled Stone Cold about his Green Lantern tattoo, Helms adopted the moniker of The Hurricane. Certainly not a Green Lantern rip off, Helms steered fully into the gimmick change and kicked off a wonderful run that saw him become one of the most popular workers on the roster.
He did little during the Invasion storyline, but some of his highlights afterwards were tremendous. His mini-feud with The Rock and his attempt at a double chokeslam on Stone Cold and Triple H in the 2002 Royal Rumble will never not be funny.
Helms made The Hurricane gimmick work and we should be thankful for the Invasion storyline for birthing such a wonderful slice of wrestling fun.
