Jake 'The Snake' Roberts is as iconic as they come, arguably the most iconic superstar never to hold the biggest prize in the game. Rhyming in professional wrestling is always fair game, and 'Jake the Snake' simply rolls off the tongue. It fits the character, it fits the image and it fits the man.

However, this could simply be due to the power and time and familiarity.

If you took aside someone with zero interest in professional wrestling and gave them the names 'Jake Roberts' and 'Aurelian Smith Jr', and asked them which was a cooler moniker, most would plump for the latter. Heck, if you asked most people which was a real name and which was a fictional one, you'd get more folk believing that Aurelian Smith was born Jake Roberts.

Aurelian Smith Jr. even sounds snake-like, if such a comment can be allowed. Aurelian gives off images of being tough to hold down, being cunning, being somewhat sinister and dastardly. At his very best, that is exactly what Jake Roberts was.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
