10 Awesome UFC Fighters Who Went On Terrible Runs
8. BJ Penn
When you've fought as many times as B.J. Penn has in UFC (27 bouts as of writing) a few low periods are to be expected. Yet, his latest bad run raises the question: how is he still being paid to fight people?
When Penn announced himself on the UFC stage - his first venture into MMA - he quickly put together an impressive 6-1-1 record inside the Octagon.
Not bad for a guy who was only three years into a career in Mixed Martial Arts.
After dancing around K-1 for a while, Penn returned to UFC to take on Georges St-Pierre (him again!) at UFC 58 and lost via split decision.
This close match-up led to an eventual dominating of the Lightweight division for Penn. He defended the Lightweight title for just over two years (even breaking the record for defences of the belt) before losing it to Frankie Edgar. He also lost a Welterweight Championship match with GSP in the middle of this run.
Penn lost the title rematch against Edgar, but vanquished Matt Hughes upon his return to Welterweight.
Then the sh*t hit the fan.
Penn is currently in the midst of a SEVEN fight losing streak and was released by the company in September 2019.
Who knows if we'll ever see his hands raised inside a UFC Octagon again?
