WarGames had only been existence for two years by the time the 1989 Great American Bash rolled around, but WCW were already onto its 16th incarnation. Most remain lost to time, having taken place on untelevised house shows, but this clash stands proudly among best WG bouts ever, and it's packed with great moments.

It was focused entirely on tag teams, and had been set up after Road Warrior Hawk was viciously assaulted by Terry Gordy and Jimmy Garvin in tag bout nine days earlier. Garvin and Gordy fought Bobby Eaton 2-on-1 early on, but things escalated with the arrival of 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams, who memorably pressed slammed Gordy into the cage's roof eight times in a row.

It turned into an all out brawl with Animal's arrival, and Hawk entered last, desperate to put a hurting on those who'd wronged him. 'The Match Beyond' was scrappy at first, but the babyfaces eventually took control, and wore Garvin down with a prolonged neck-based assault. This lead to Hawk's ultimate revenge as he tapped Garvin out with a hangman's neckbreaker, and while the heels tried to atone their loss by destroying Animal after the bell, Hawk made a heroic save, ending a match that holds up remarkably well on a high note.
