10 Awesome WCW Moments You Forgot

8. Mike Awesome Vs. ICP On Top Of A Bus

Let's not try to convince you that 'That 70s Guy' Mike Awesome vs. Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope in a hardcore handicap match was a good match. It wasn't, quite the opposite in fact. It was two minutes of mindless brawling that followed an equally mindless promo, one memorable only for Violent J's list of hardcore wrestlers, most of whom are still alive today. The match was awful, 'That 70s Guy' was a terrible gimmick and ICP shouldn't have been wrestling.

So no, it wasn't good. In fact, it was bad. It was very bad, so bad that it was absolutely amazing.

This wasn't WCW at its worst. It wasn't an exercise in reputation over ability, in paycheck over product. It wasn't stars of the past desperately clinging to the spotlight, quite the opposite; Mike Awesome was a pro wrestler with countless potential while ICP, for all their critics, were actually kinda better than you remember.

This was car-crash TV featuring a group of men who all deserved better. The match is famous for a botch that sums up latter-day WCW, a sequence of events that spiral out of control and can't be stopped, slipping out of control and falling off the roof of the bus. This was WCW at its most helpless, becoming a study in WCW in the process.

Pretty sweet bus, though.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
