10 Awesome WCW Moments You Forgot

7. Jim Duggan In Team Canada

'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan is one of pro wrestling's most iconic babyfaces. The most American of all the patriotic heroes, Hacksaw was a perennial fan favourite wherever he went, complete with his goofy grin and ubiquitous 2x4, capped off with whatever that 'Hoooo!' was supposed to be an insistence on referring to everyone as 'tough guy'. He was a career babyface.

It almost goes without saying then that WCW decided to turn him heel. Playing the bad guy wasn't uncharted territory for Duggan but nearly 20 years had passed since his run as a bounty hunter in Mid-South. WCW didn't just turn Duggan heel; he turned heel against his country. Unthinkable! Madness! Duggan turned his back on the United States, joining Lance Storm and Team Canada in the process.

And somehow, someway, it worked. Maybe it was the goodwill that Duggan had built with the fans over the years or maybe the best example yet of what a god damn great professional wrestler he was, but Duggan managed to be a Nitro highlight week after week, despite hating a gimmick that was almost specifically designed to hinder him.

Duggan was never a great in-ring performer, especially by the time 2000 rolled around, but the man was a damn professional, and a tremendous one at that.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
