Cassidy’s gimmick is a denim-clad slacker with the aloofness and lethargy ramped up to pro-wrestling ridiculousness. Despite the character’s detached nature, the persona needs an enthused crowd to create magic. Cassidy’s slowed-to-a-stop offence needs a crowd screaming after each graze on his opponent to complete the gimmick’s humour. ‘Freshly Squeezed’ is a deceptively skilled wrestler who is in on the joke, inviting fans along for the ride. In the ring, he uses his covert technical skill to help his opponents shine.

Since his debut, Cassidy has continued to woo the industry, with Pro Wrestling Illustrated naming him 2020’s Most Popular Wrestler and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awarding him Best Gimmick. It also helps TNT executives love the character and he shifts tons of merch.

Tony Khan has given the man behind the gimmick praise for his intelligence, saying he had “no idea how well-thought-out this all was”. Cassidy himself describes the character as “a giant middle finger to professional wrestling”. Yet, fans have embraced him like a Stone Cold Steve Austin one-finger salute.
