Former WWE writer Alex Greenfield once stated that Vince McMahon's extreme hatred of Christian's face was the main reason 'Captain Charisma' was never pushed to the same level as former tag partner Edge in WWE.

Whether this is true or not, Christian was made to wait a long, long time for main event success. It came 16 years after he'd debuted for the company, with Christian defeating World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules 2011, creating a huge, cathartic moment for those pining for his ascension.

Edge felt it more than most. Forced to retire just two weeks prior, 'The Rated R Superstar' cried real tears as he celebrated with his storyline brother. It was huge, and sparked hopes that despite his advancing years, Christian had a shot of at least scraping his buddy's World Title legacy.

Randy Orton put an end to that just two days later, pinning Christian for the big gold belt at the next SmackDown tapings. That was it for 'Captain Charisma.' He won the belt back at Money In The Bank, but dropped it after four weeks, returning to familiar upper-midcard territory for the rest of his run.
