People raised on bad Macho Man impressions for the last thirty years have no idea how strong Randy Savage’s promos used to be - especially compared to the stodgy fare that WWE superstars are forced to chew on these days.

From those bad impressions, everybody assumes that he was nothing but intense huffing and puffing. There’s plenty of that in there - along with Savage’s idiosyncratic approach to pronunciation - but ‘the Macho Man’ was also genuinely and deliberately funny, with a keen intellect.

His unstoppable, in-character chat show interviews on the Arsenio show are the stuff of legend, as ‘the Macho Man’ Randy Savage carried everything before him. The ‘And The Beat Goes On’ promo is a classic example.

Insane, yet oddly poetic genius - and no matter what those terrible impressionists would have you believe, this is a controlled, careful delivery, as thoroughly planned out as his matches were.
