Even children with access to the most rudimentary of preschool toys learn that you simply cannot force a round shape through a square hole. The same can be said for trying to push a superstar or agenda onto a fanbase with collective hearts set on something else.

In early 2012, Dolph Ziggler was one of the most popular stars on the roster. Fans longed to see him evolve beyond his cult hero status and become a true headliner. WWE, however, had other ideas and - kept the belt on long standing champion, Sheamus.

At No Way Out 2012, the two competed in the opening match of the night. The New Jersey crowd was strongly behind Ziggler. As the match went on, thunderous "Let's go Ziggler" chants filled the arena, only for Jerry Lawler to state on commentary:

“Listen to this WWE Universe, let’s go Sheamus”

Lawler is not solely to blame, as the line was clearly fed to him - much like many others on this list. The flagrant, ultimately laughable attempt to pull the wool over fans eyes only succeeded in garnering laughter and disbelief.
