10 Awful WWE Clichés That Refuse To Go Away

7. Celebrity Burials

Vince McMahon Jr.’s WWE have always marketed themselves as a multi-faceted entertainment company rather than a straight-up wrestling promotion. It started with the involvement of celebrities like Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper at WrestleMania I, and has expanded through to the modern era.

Ashton Kutcher was on Raw the other month, Jon Stewart keeps popping his head through the door, and if rumours are to be believed, Shaquille O’Neal will be the Big Show’s opponent at WrestleMania 33. We’ve thankfully moved on from the days of weekly celebrity guest hosts on Raw, but WWE still love snuggling up to celebrities.

Celebrity appearances are almost always cringeworthy, and WWE’s habit of using these non-wrestlers to bury their own talent is incredibly grating. From Wayne Rooney slapping Wade Barrett to Snooki winning a match at WrestleMania, WWE love feeding their wrestlers’ momentum to celebrities who’ll likely never appear for the company again, and nobody benefits.

For as long as WWE use celebrities for cross-promotional purposes, this cliché will endure. Still, it can be pretty hilarious when it goes completely wrong: who didn’t enjoy Bo Dallas accidentally destroying Flo Rida in a rap battle earlier this year?!
