10 Babyface Champions WWE Fans Just Wouldn’t Accept

6. Alberto Del Rio (2013)

Some pro wrestlers are just born to play the villain. Whether sneering or smiling, there's an unlikeable quality to these men and women that can never work when employers try to cast them as heroic babyfaces.

Alberto Del Rio fits nicely into that category, because his run as the gregarious 'man of the people' millionaire in 2014 was ill-advised at best and downright poorly executed at worst.

WWE fans had been conditioned for years to accept Del Rio as a pompous socialite who couldn't give a damn about what they wanted to see; selfish and ruthless to the core, the Mexican aristocrat character Alberto honed was clearly defined and one he played extremely well.

When everyone was suddenly expected to cheer for Del Rio just because he had saved his personal ring announcer (Ricardo Rodriguez) from a beating at the hands of 3MB and was dubbed a hero to the Latino community, it came across as forced.

The babyface run was aborted just over six months in; even though Del Rio had beaten Big Show for the World Heavyweight Title, been recast as an awkward face and feuded with the giant, WWE realised that his best work came as a heel.
