10 Backstage WWE Feuds That Changed Everything
3. Stephanie McMahon Vs. Shane McMahon
As Vince McMahon dominated the pro wrestling world in the 1980s and '90s, it was widely accepted throughout the company that his son, Shane, would one day fill his shoes as WWE's chairman - after all, Vince took over from his father, Vincent James, who took over from his own father, Roderick "Jess" McMahon.
In the early 2000s though, it was Stephanie McMahon who started to resume control from Vince on the creative end of things, and as she grew closer to Triple H (they married in 2003), it started to look like they would be the new Vince and Linda - WWE's ruling couple.
Still, the company was Shane's birthright - and while it was Stephanie's, too, it certainly wasn't Triple H's. Shane kept trying to grow WWE in international markets (while playing an occasional character on TV), but in 2009, a huge falling out with Vince - reportedly over the future of WWE and the roles the children would play - led him to resign from the company.
When Shane returned in 2016, he only played an on-screen character, but the circumstances of his departure were fodder for storylines. He accused Triple H and Stephanie of having ruined WWE in his absence, and used that as an impetus to challenge Vince McMahon for control of the company - leading to the money match (with Undertaker) and the largest WWE event of all time.
